About
Robert Piloty was a distinguished Professor at the Technical University of Darmstadt, where he held a pivotal role in shaping academic and research landscapes. He was appointed to TH Darmstadt (now TU Darmstadt) in 1964 and founded the Institute for Communications Processing, which evolved into the Institute for Data Technology within the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. The Robert Piloty Building at TU Darmstadt houses the Department of Computer Science, reflecting his enduring legacy. His work emphasized interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly between electrical engineering, mathematics, and computer science.
Prof. Piloty pioneered early computing systems, notably leading the development of the PERM (Programmable Electronic Computing Machine Munich) at Technical University of Munich in the 1950s. This system became the core of the Leibniz Supercomputing Center and is now preserved in the Deutsches Museum. He was instrumental in establishing computer science as an independent discipline in Germany, co-founding TU Darmstadt’s Department of Computer Science in 1972—one of the first such institutions in the country. As Vice President of the International Federation of Information Processing (IFIP), he promoted German computer science globally.
His contributions were widely recognized through national and international awards. The Robert Piloty Prize, launched in 2016, honors his legacy, awarding outstanding researchers in computer science, electrical engineering, information technology, and applied mathematics. The prize is jointly administered by TU Darmstadt’s Departments of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, and Mathematics, which maintain close collaborative ties in research and education. These departments continue his vision, with the Computer Science and Mathematics divisions emphasizing applied mathematics and scientific computing in their work.
Prof. Piloty’s influence extends to the Rhine-Main-Neckar region, positioning Darmstadt as a European hub for information and communication technologies. His interdisciplinary approach at the Institute for Data Technology and PERM project underscored his ability to bridge theoretical and applied sciences, leaving a lasting impact on academic and industrial communities.
