Robert Patrick Newcomb is a Professor of Luso-Brazilian Studies at the University of California, Davis, and Undergraduate Portuguese Adviser in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese. He co-directs the UC Comparative Iberian Studies Working Group and is affiliated with Comparative Literature and Critical Theory programs. His work focuses on comparative Luso-Hispanic literatures, Iberian studies, and transnational cultural dynamics, with a particular emphasis on 19th-20th century texts and the essay genre. Newcomb has authored Writing Out of Place: Dislocation and Transnational Lusophone Literature (forthcoming) and co-edited volumes such as Transatlantic Studies: Latin America, Iberia, and Africa (2019). He holds a Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. in Luso-Brazilian Studies/International Relations from Brown University.
His research explores themes like Iberianism, colonial legacies, and literary translation, with notable publications analyzing figures like Antero de Quental, Alfredo Bosi, and Miguel de Unamuno. He has received the Joukowsky Outstanding Dissertation Award (2008). Teaching spans undergraduate courses in Brazilian literature and graduate seminars on post-colonial Lusophone literatures.
