Robert Maaß has been Honorary Professor in the Department of Materials Engineering, TUM School of Engineering and Design, Technical University of Munich since January 2024. Simultaneously he serves as Head of the Materials Engineering Department and member of the directorate at the Federal Institute of Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin.
Education:
- 2005–2009: PhD – EPFL Lausanne & Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland
- 2000–2005: Triple Diploma in Materials Science and Engineering – Technical University of Luleå (Sweden), INPL/EEIGM Nancy (France), Saarland University (Germany)
Research Focus:
Prof. Maaß’s work centers on materials engineering for additive manufacturing, mechanical behavior of metallic alloys, and advanced non-destructive testing methods. His investigations bridge fundamental materials physics with industrial application, particularly in steel and other structural metals.

Prior to his current posts, he held an assistant/adjunct professorship at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2015-2020), led a junior research group at Georg-August University of Göttingen (2013-2015), and was a Feodor von Lynen Fellow at Caltech (2011-2012). He also gained industry insight as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company (2012-2013).
