Robert Lucas

Professor Robert Lucas holds the GSK Chair in Neuroscience at the University of Manchester, leading research on photoreception mechanisms in mammals. His laboratory investigates how rods, cones and melanopsin photoreceptors regulate circadian rhythms and visual perception, with applications in optogenetics and lighting design.

Key research areas include melanopsin's role in non-visual light responses, development of optogenetic tools using animal opsins, and therapeutic approaches for retinal degeneration. His work has established standardized light measurement protocols for laboratory mammals and informed international lighting standards through CIE Division 3.

Lucas has developed wearable technology for daylight monitoring and demonstrated that human rod opsin can restore vision in retinal degeneration models. Elected to Academia Europaea, his research spans basic photoreceptor physiology and applications in circadian health, with recent publications in Current Biology and PLoS Biology.
