Robert Kramer is a Professor of History at St. Norbert College, where he has been a faculty member since 1989. He specializes in Sudanese social history (18th-20th centuries), focusing on identity change, social integration, and messianic Islamic thought. He holds a B.A. in History from Bard College, an M.A. in Middle East Studies from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. in African History from Northwestern University. He conducted Arabic studies at the American University in Cairo (1980–1982).

His research includes Fulbright-funded work in Khartoum (1986–1987), studies at the Sudan Archive (University of Durham) and the Public Records Office in London, and fieldwork in Kumasi, Ghana (1990). He authored Holy City on the Nile (2010) and co-edited The Historical Dictionary of the Sudan (3rd/4th editions). His teaching spans Middle Eastern history, African studies, and Islamic thought.
