About
Robert Klein is a Doctoral Researcher at the Department of Geosciences and Geography, University of Helsinki, working within the Digital Geography Lab and the Doctoral Programme in Interdisciplinary Environmental Sciences. His research focuses on urban green infrastructure and its relationship with human mobility patterns across European cities.
His primary research interests include urban green space analysis, travel behavior, and geospatial methodologies for measuring environmental exposure during urban mobility. Klein employs GIS-based approaches to examine how street greenery influences walking choices, temporal variations in green exposure, and accessibility to cooling spaces for vulnerable populations.
Klein's recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on multi-city European studies (spanning 43-86 cities), with particular focus on the tension between green routes and shortest paths for pedestrians. His methodological innovations include developing sensitive travel time matrices using open-source software and analyzing radiant heat exposure for elderly populations.
As an active participant in the academic community, Klein has attended conferences including the 19th International Conference on Location Based Services (2025), Urban Transitions 2024, and Geography Days 2024. He also serves as a peer reviewer for Urban Forestry and Urban Greening.
Currently participating in the European Commission-funded GREENTRAVEL project (2023-2027), Klein collaborates with an international team investigating green travel infrastructure. His work demonstrates strong potential to inform urban planning practices and EU environmental policies, particularly regarding the 2024 restoration law.
