National Institutes of HealthAbout
Dr. Robert Joseph Crouch serves as Senior Investigator and Head of the Section on Formation of RNA at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), part of the National Institutes of Health. With over five decades of research experience since joining NICHD in 1971, he leads groundbreaking investigations into RNA/DNA hybrid resolution mechanisms and their critical role in genome stability.
Dr. Crouch received his Ph.D. from the Biochemistry Division of the Chemistry Department at the University of Illinois in 1968. Following a brief instructorship at the University of Bergen, Norway, and postdoctoral training with Dr. Raymond Gestland at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, he established his research program at NICHD where he has remained throughout his distinguished career.
His research focuses on the physiological, biochemical, and molecular genetic events governing recognition and resolution of RNA/DNA hybrids, with particular emphasis on:
- RNase H enzymes as essential guardians of genome integrity
- Mechanisms of R-loop formation and resolution during transcription
- Consequences of ribonucleotide incorporation in DNA
- Links between RNase deficiencies and human diseases including mitochondrial myopathies and Aicardi-Goutières syndrome
Analysis of Dr. Crouch's publication history reveals an evolving research trajectory from fundamental enzyme characterization to sophisticated disease modeling. His work increasingly integrates advanced genetic techniques with molecular analysis, demonstrating how RNA/DNA hybrid resolution mechanisms intersect with DNA repair pathways, mitochondrial function, and immune response systems. The consistent publication record through 2022 indicates ongoing productivity and scientific relevance.
Dr. Crouch maintains an active research laboratory with the following personnel:
- Susana M. Cerritelli, PhD - Research Biologist
- Kiran Sakhuja, MS, MSc - Research Biologist
- Andrea Mota, BS - Postbaccalaureate Fellow
- Alexander Robinson, BS - Postbaccalaureate Fellow
