About
Dr. Robert Hogg is a Distinguished Professor and Associate Dean of Research in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University, with a joint appointment as Senior Research Scientist at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. His research examines health disparities among people living with HIV, particularly focusing on aging, substance use, and the impact of structural determinants on health outcomes.
Education:
- MA Anthropology, University of Victoria
- Ph.D Demography, Australian National University
His current research investigates how sex and gender influence healthcare utilization and outcomes following non-fatal overdoses in people with and without HIV. He employs demographic methods and observational cohort research to understand how socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and systemic inequities affect HIV-related outcomes and access to care during the overdose crisis.
Publications demonstrate a consistent focus on HIV epidemiology, aging with HIV, and health services utilization, with recent expansion into COVID-19 impacts. Methodologies include population-based cohort studies, health administrative data analysis, and mixed-methods approaches to understand health disparities.
Awards and Honors:
- Member of the Order of Canada
- Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada
He teaches courses on global HIV/AIDS and experiential health learning, mentoring graduate students in population health methods. His laboratory employs interdisciplinary approaches to understand health service utilization patterns among vulnerable populations.
