Robert Hariman is the Owen L. Coon Professor of Argumentation and Debate at the Department of Communication Studies, School of Communication, Northwestern University. He joined the faculty in 2004 and serves as Director of the Master of Science in Communication program.

- BA in Communication from Macalester College
Hariman’s research explores public art and artistry in political judgment and modern society, with a focus on visual public culture and rhetoric. His current project reimagines formalism as a post-critical method for addressing Anthropocene challenges.
His publications span rhetoric, political communication, and visual culture, including analyses of iconic photography, political parody, and rhetorical devices like chiasmus. His work has been translated into Arabic, Chinese, and French.
