About
Robert Gray is a Professor of Mathematics and EPSRC Research Fellow at the University of East Anglia's School of Mathematics, within the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Physics. He holds the title of Director of Admissions for the School (2017–2021) and is a member of the Algebra, Number Theory, Logic, and Representations (ANTLR) group. His career includes roles such as Reader in Pure Mathematics (2020–2024), EPSRC Research Fellow (2022–2027), and Senior Lecturer (2017–2020).
Gray's research focuses on algebra, particularly combinatorial and geometric group and semigroup theory, algorithmic problems, decidability, homological finiteness properties, algebraic combinatorics, and actions of groups/monoids on graphs and topological spaces. He leads the EPSRC-funded project on algorithmic, topological, and geometric aspects of infinite groups and monoids (EP/V032003/1). Past grants include studies on special inverse monoids and finiteness conditions in semigroups.
He has advised multiple PhD students, including Katie Reilly and Jonathan Warne, and collaborates internationally. His editorial work includes the International Journal of Algebra and Computation. Key achievements include contributions to inverse monoid theory, maximal subgroup structure, and resolving decidability questions in algebra.
