Robert Gardiner is a Senior Lecturer in Music Education and Programme Lead for the PGCE Music Education at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM). He holds an EdD from Manchester Metropolitan University, an MA from Zurich University of the Arts, and a BMus(Hons) from RNCM. His roles include strategic leadership of education studies, developing the Master’s of Education Degree and PGCE collaboration with MMU, and advancing research in pedagogy and teacher training. He focuses on whole-class music pedagogies, instrumental teaching, and socio-cultural influences on teacher identity.
Education background: Began at RNCM for his undergraduate studies, pursued PGCE and MA in Zurich, and completed his EdD in 2022 examining student teacher development. He has extensive experience in primary, secondary, and higher education, staff development, and leading youth ensembles.
Research interests include music education policy, teacher efficacy, and the interplay of ideology and pedagogy. He explores how policy impacts new teachers’ confidence, particularly in marginalized contexts. Current projects analyze educational discourses through post-structuralist lenses.
Collaborative work includes regional educational partnerships and curriculum development. Beyond academia, he maintains active clarinet performance in contemporary music and chamber groups.
