Robert Balun is a Full-Time Lecturer in the Program in Writing and Rhetoric at Stony Brook University, located in Humanities 1032. He holds an MFA in Poetry from The City College of New York, where he taught for a decade before joining Stony Brook. His research and creative work bridges poetry, environmental humanities, and ethics in the Anthropocene.
His scholarly book An Ethics of Thinking and Making in the Anthropocene: The Aesthetics of Disruption (Routledge, 2025) explores interdisciplinary connections between aesthetics and ecological crises. He has published poetry in venues like American Poetry Journal and Barrow Street, with two collections from The Operating System and Ursus Americanus Press.
Teaching focuses on creative writing and rhetoric, including poetry workshops with Brooklyn Poets. Office hours in Spring 2025 are Tuesdays 11:00–12:30 and Thursdays 12:00–1:30, with additional by-appointment availability.
