Roben Gieling is a Senior Lecturer in Histopathology at the Department of Applied Sciences, Northumbria University. He holds a Master’s in Medical Biology from Utrecht University and a PhD in Medicine from the University of Amsterdam (2005). His postdoctoral research spanned institutions including USC Los Angeles, Newcastle University, and the University of Manchester, contributing to 19 high-impact publications in oncology, imaging, and hepatology. At Manchester, he supervised 3 PhD students and taught in Pharmacy and Medicine programs.
His research focuses on cancer drug testing, tumor hypoxia, metastasis mechanisms, and organoid engineering to replace animal models. Key contributions include developing novel carbonic anhydrase inhibitors and methods for high-precision tumor response assessment. He is a member of the METOXIA consortium targeting tumor hypoxia in cancer treatment.
Roben joined Northumbria in 2018 to establish his own research group, contributing to biomedical science education and advancing translational research in oncology and molecular medicine.
