Rob Atkinson

Professor Rob Atkinson serves as Director of Urban Research at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), leading the Geography and Environmental Management department within the Faculty of Environment and Technology (FET). His work bridges urban policy, governance, and European spatial development. With qualifications including a BSc in Sociology, MA in Political Behaviour, and PhD, Atkinson’s research focuses on urban regeneration, social exclusion, and EU urban policy.

His career includes prominent roles such as Vice-President of the European Urban Research Association (EURA) and editor of Urban Research and Practice. He has led EU-funded projects like SELMA (FP5), G-FORS (FP6), and ATTREG, advising the European Commission on urban and regional policy. Notable contributions include evaluating the New Deal for Communities and shaping Poland’s EU presidency agenda on urban cohesion policy in 2011.
