Ritwick Ghosh

Ritwick Ghosh is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University, part of the College of Natural Resources. His research focuses on environmental governance, particularly the role of market institutions in addressing environmental challenges like biodiversity loss and climate change. He holds a PhD in Natural Resources from Cornell University (2019), an MPA in Environmental Policy from Cornell (2013), and a BSc in Economics and Statistics from Singapore Management University (2007).

Before academia, Ghosh worked in economic consulting in Singapore and with the UNEP’s The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity initiative in New Delhi. He has held faculty positions at New York University and the University of Denver, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Arizona State University’s New Carbon Economy Consortium.

His research interests span science and technology studies, human geography, ecological economics, and public administration. Key themes include the politics of environmental policy innovations, the ethics of market-based solutions (e.g., biodiversity offsetting), and the interplay between scientific authority and policy-making. His work critiques overreliance on technical expertise in environmental governance and advocates for more equitable, socially inclusive approaches.

Recent publications engage with debates around the Anthropocene concept, green developmental policies in the US and France, and the role of bureaucratic autonomy in shaping environmental markets. Ghosh’s international projects span the US, Europe, India, and Southeast Asia, reflecting his commitment to comparative and global environmental governance analysis.
