Dr. Ricky Chan is an Associate Professor in the School of Engineering at RMIT University, specializing in structural engineering and earthquake-resistant design. He holds a doctoral degree from the University of Queensland and has extensive industry experience as a chartered structural engineer in Hong Kong. His research focuses on seismic risk mitigation, vibration control, and innovative energy dissipation systems, including the Steel Slit Damper and Yielding Shear Panel Device. Chan has collaborated with Japanese universities on IoT-enabled earthquake resistance systems and earthquake early warning applications.
He led the successful accreditation of RMIT's Hong Kong Civil & Infrastructure program by Engineers Australia, Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, and the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation. Chan is a five-time recipient of the Student Choice Teaching Award (2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2018) and has supervised numerous research projects on topics like smart base isolation systems, bridge management, and masonry structure protection.
