Rick Ord

Rick Ord is an Emeritus faculty member at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) within the Jacobs School of Engineering's Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department. He held the rank of Lecturer from 1991, transitioning to full-time in 2001, and retired in 2019. His roles included Director of the CSE Computing Facility (1988–2001) and instructor at UCSD Extension (1987–2005).

Education: M.S. in Computer Science from UCSD (1987).

Research/Teaching Focus: Specialized in Unix systems, programming education (C/C++, Java), and foundational computer science courses. Authored courses like CSE 3, 5A, 8A/B, 11, 15L, 21, 30, 70, 80, 86, and 131. Maintained a strong focus on pedagogical excellence and student mentorship.

Awards: Recipient of numerous teaching honors including multiple 'Teacher of the Year' awards (CSE/Jacobs School), Warren College recognition, and the Barbara and Paul Saltman Distinguished Teaching Award.

Post-retirement: Serves as Emeriti Mentor to Chancellor's Scholars through UCSD Retirement Association. Supports CSE initiatives via scholarship funds for undergraduates and lecturers.

Leadership: Managed the CSE Computing Facility and maintained the USENIX Association's conference proceedings library for academic access.
