Rick Brunson

Rick Brunson is a Senior Lecturer in the Nicholson School's Film and Mass Media Program at the University of Central Florida, where he has taught digital, print, and broadcast journalism for over 20 years. He holds a dual background as an award-winning educator and professional journalist with 40 years of experience at Florida news outlets, including the Orlando Sentinel and WFTV Channel 9.

His research interests focus on news reporting, editing, and journalism ethics. Brunson has received numerous accolades, including two Emmy Awards for documentary field production, the 2024 Faculty Champion for Community News national honor, and multiple Society of Professional Journalists’ Sunshine State Awards.

Educated at UCF (Class of 1984), he has deep roots in Central Florida. His work includes mentoring students in impactful projects, such as the 2022 Edward R. Murrow Award-winning multimedia report on civil rights advocates Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore. He remains active in fostering news-academic partnerships through his courses.
