Dr. Richard Weinkamer is a Research Professor and Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces (Potsdam, Germany), where he has led the Biomaterials research group since 2003. He holds associated investigator roles at Humboldt University Berlin's Cluster of Excellence 'Image Knowledge Gestaltung' (since 2012) and the Berlin-Brandenburg School for Regenerative Therapies (since 2014).
Education:
- Master in Mathematics, University of Vienna (1995)
- PhD in Physics, University of Vienna and Rutgers University (2000)
- Habilitation in Theoretical Physics, Humboldt University Berlin (2012)
Research Focus: His work centers on mechanobiological systems, particularly bone dynamics including remodeling, healing, and mineralization. He employs computational modeling to study mechanics and adaptation in biological materials, investigates hierarchical structure-function relationships in tissues, utilizes scanning acoustic microscopy for micromechanical characterization, and explores phase transformations in natural/artificial materials.
Leadership: Heads a research group specializing in Biomaterials and Mechanobiology at the Max Planck Institute, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations across materials science and biological physics.
