Richard Mulkey is an Associate Professor of English and Director of Creative Writing at Converse College’s School of the Arts, Department of Art, Design & Letters. He directs the BFA program in Creative & Professional Writing and previously led the Low-Residency MFA program. His teaching focuses on Creative Writing, Poetry, Twentieth-Century American Poetry, and Science and Literature.
He has taught at various U.S. and European universities and served as a visiting writer at institutions like Ohio Wesleyan University and Michigan State University. His research and creative work emphasize poetry and interdisciplinary connections between science and literature.
Selected honors include the Hawthornden Fellowship, Literary Review’s Charles Angoff Award, and Converse College’s O’Herron Award for Faculty Excellence. Mulkey’s poetry collections include Ravenous, New & Selected Poems and Greatest Hits: 1994-2004. His work appears in journals like Crab Orchard Review, Denver Quarterly, and Verse Daily, with poems featured on NPR’s The Writer’s Almanac.
