Dr. Richard L. Tower is a Professor of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), where he also serves as Interim Medical Director of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT (2024-Present). With over 15 years of academic experience, he has progressed from Assistant Professor (2007-2015) to Associate Professor (2015-2022) to his current full Professor position. Dr. Tower holds multiple leadership roles including Director of the Fellowship Program (2012-Present) and Co-Director of Fellowship Education (2014-Present) at MCW. He is actively involved in national organizations as a member of the Board of Trustees for the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (ASPHO) and serves on the Accreditation Appeals Panel for Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the ACGME.
Dr. Tower's research focuses on pediatric leukemia/lymphoma, vascular anomalies, lymphatic system disorders, and medical education in hematology-oncology. His recent work includes multiple chapters in Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics on lymphatic system anatomy and disorders (2024), research on targeted treatments for vascular anomalies (2021), and development of communication skills simulation training for fellowship education (2025). His publications demonstrate expertise across clinical hematology-oncology, medical education, and rare disease management, with work appearing in high-impact journals including Journal of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, British Journal of Dermatology, and JAMA Dermatology.
Dr. Tower has received numerous teaching awards including being named to 'Best Doctors in America' for five consecutive periods (2013-2022) and the 'Expert Teacher' award from Pediatrics (2016). His leadership extends to national medical education initiatives where he has contributed to the development of Entrustable Professional Activities for Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and served on ACGME committees developing milestones for fellowship training. He has mentored over 20 fellows since 2007 and continues to shape the next generation of pediatric hematology-oncology specialists through his educational leadership and research mentorship.
