Richard Joyce

Dr Richard Joyce is a Senior Lecturer at the Melbourne Law School (University of Melbourne), specializing in the history, theory, and political economy of international law with a focus on sovereignty. His work integrates continental philosophy and post-colonial theory. He leads a major research project on 'International Law and the Challenge of Populism' (2020–present), funded by the ARC, collaborating with scholars including Sundhya Pahuja, Andrew Benjamin, James Martel, and Kojo Koram.

Previously, he taught at Monash University, Reading University, Birkbeck College, King’s College London, and University College London. He also served on the Global Faculty of Harvard Law School’s Institute for Global Law and Policy. Joyce is the author of Competing Sovereignties (Routledge, 2013) and co-editor of Events: The Force of International Law (Routledge, 2011).
