Dr. Richard Johnson is a Senior Lecturer in US Politics & Policy at Queen Mary University of London's School of Politics and International Relations. Previously at Lancaster University, he holds degrees from Cambridge and Oxford and has held visiting positions at Yale, Cambridge, and Beijing Foreign Studies University. His research examines race, democracy, and policymaking in the US and UK contexts.
Research interests focus on racial politics, electoral behavior, and political institutions in the US, as well as Labour Party history and constitutional change in the UK. Current projects investigate ethnic minority voting patterns, comparative abortion politics, and Labour Euroscepticism.
Publications demonstrate a focus on racial justice, electoral systems, and transatlantic political history. Recent work examines gender politics in European integration, anti-apartheid activism, and institutional bias in legislative systems.
Current PhD students include Darren Bowes (Eisenhower administration and desegregation) and Matthew Schlachter (moderates in the Republican Party).
