Richard J Needs

Professor Richard J Needs is affiliated with the University of Cambridge as a Professor of Theoretical and Computational Physics in the Department of Physics. He is also a Fellow in Natural Sciences (Physical) at his college.

Research interests include:

• Computational electronic structure of materials
• Quantum Monte Carlo simulations
• Density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory
• Development of the CASINO quantum Monte Carlo code

He has been active in these fields since 1983, focusing on structural properties of complex systems such as surfaces, interfaces, defects, and clusters.

Teaching roles involve:

• Lecturing Part II Concepts in Physics
• Supervising Part II Thermal and Statistical Physics and Quantum Condensed Matter Physics courses
• Holding Examples Classes in Theoretical Physics (TP2)
