About
Dr. Richard Gordon is an Honorary Associate Professor at the UQ Centre for Clinical Research under the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Queensland. His multidisciplinary research program in Translational Neuroscience integrates immunology, drug development, pharmacology, metabolomics, and microbial metagenomics to address neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s (PD) and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
- Doctor of Philosophy, University of Iowa
- Australasian Society of Clinical & Experimental Pharmacologists & Toxicologists
Dr. Gordon’s research focuses on chronic immune and inflammasome activation in the CNS, gut dysbiosis in PD pathophysiology, therapeutic targeting of the gut-brain axis, drug discovery/repositioning, and clinical biomarker validation for PD/ALS. His work bridges target validation in human patients with mechanistic insights from disease models.
Recent publications highlight trends in inflammasome inhibition (e.g., NLRP3 targeting), gut-brain axis interactions (e.g., microbiome changes), neuroinflammatory signaling (e.g., Fyn kinase, PKCδ), and translational strategies for disease-modifying therapies. Key keywords: Neuroscience, Immunology, Neuropharmacology, Toxicology, Gut-Brain Axis.
- Scientific Awards: Ian Potter Foundation Travel Award (2015)
- Grants: Funded by The Michael J. Fox Foundation, NHMRC, Motor Neurone Disease Research Institute, and the Queensland Government
Dr. Gordon supervises PhD students in projects like "Novel therapeutic strategies for neuroinflammation in PD/ALS" and "Drug discovery for neurodegeneration". He leads the COMBO-PD clinical trial and established the Queensland Drug Repurposing Initiative (QDRI). His affiliations include the World Parkinson Coalition (WPC) as a Science Ambassador.
