Richard English

Professor Richard English FBA is a leading scholar of modern Irish and British politics, history, and terrorism studies. He serves as Director of the Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice at Queen's University Belfast, where he holds the title of Professor of Politics. Previously, he was Wardlaw Professor of Politics and Director of the Handa Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence at the University of St Andrews (2011–2016). His research focuses on nationalism, political violence, and the historical and political dimensions of terrorism, with notable works including Does Terrorism Work? A History and Irish Freedom: The History of Nationalism in Ireland. He has been honored with a CBE (2018) and the Royal Irish Academy's Gold Medal (2019), among other distinctions. His academic affiliations include fellowships with the British Academy, Royal Irish Academy, and Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Professor English's work integrates historical analysis with contemporary policy debates, examining how terrorism and political violence shape modern conflicts.
