Richard Carr is an Associate Professor at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), based in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. He serves as Course Leader for ARU's BA (Hons) Politics and International Relations, teaching modules such as Welfare State to European State? and The Research Toolkit. His research focuses on 20th-century British politics, British-Irish relations, British conservatism, and American politics, with notable works including acclaimed biographies of Charlie Chaplin and studies on Tony Blair's relationship with Bill Clinton.
Dr. Carr holds a PhD in History from the University of East Anglia, an MPhil in Modern European History from Churchill College, University of Cambridge, and a BA in Modern History from the University of East Anglia. He has held affiliations with prestigious institutions such as the Churchill Archives Centre, the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, and the JFK Library in Boston as a Theodore C. Sorensen Fellow.
His research interests span British-Irish relations from the 1920s–1960s, the interwar eugenics movement, and contemporary local governance. His publications include March of the Moderates: Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, and the Rebirth of Progressive Politics (2019) and Labour’s Neighbours: reconceptualising the Ramsay Street boom and British politics from Thatcher to Blair (2022). He has also engaged in public policy work, including reports on infrastructure finance and local economic growth for think tanks like Localis.
Dr. Carr is a member of the Royal Historical Society and the Political Studies Association, and has contributed to editorial roles such as his position as a contributing editor for the blog Left Foot Forward. His recent work explores themes such as the impact of veteran MPs on post-WWI conservatism and the intersection of cultural figures like Charlie Chaplin with political movements.
