The University of ManchesterAbout
Richard Byers is an Associate Professor (Reader) in Pathology at the University of Manchester and a Consultant Haematopathologist at Manchester Royal Infirmary. He holds an honorary clinical chair with MAHSC and is affiliated with the Division of Cancer Sciences. His expertise spans molecular pathology, leukemia/lymphoma diagnostics, and translational research applying prognostic gene signatures. He developed quantum-dot (qdot) based multiplex ISH during a sabbatical at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard (2003-2004).
- Education: BSc in Anatomy, MSc in Cell and Structural Biology, PhD in Molecular Biology (bone biology)
- Roles: Chair of the Molecular Pathology Group (Pathological Society of GB&I), co-organizer of Molecular Pathology Summer School
Research focuses on diagnostic applications of microarray-derived gene signatures, including real-time PCR and qdot ISH for acute leukemia, lymphoma, and pancreatic/prostate cancers. Techniques emphasize clinical applicability across tumor types.
- Key collaborations: Broad Institute, MIT
- Publications: Over 118 outputs including high-impact journals like British Journal of Cancer and Cancer Immunology Immunotherapy
Professional service includes journal reviewing (Journal of Pathology, British Journal of Haematology) and roles in clinical pharmacology groups. His work contributes to UN SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being).
