About
Associate Professor Richard Bulbulia serves as a Research Fellow at the Clinical Trial Service Unit, University of Oxford, and maintains an active clinical practice as Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Cheltenham General Hospital. His career uniquely bridges vascular surgery practice with academic research in large-scale clinical trials.
His research expertise includes:
- Vascular and endovascular surgical techniques
- Design and execution of major randomized controlled trials
- Lipid-lowering and anti-thrombotic therapies for vascular risk reduction
- Data linkage methodologies using electronic health records
- Carotid artery disease management and stroke prevention strategies
Dr. Bulbulia coordinates long-term follow-up for landmark trials including HPS and SEARCH, and serves as Co-Principal Investigator of ACST-2, an international trial comparing carotid endarterectomy versus stenting in asymptomatic patients. This trial aims to enroll 3,600 patients to provide definitive evidence on procedural safety and long-term outcomes.
His recent publications reveal consistent focus across cardiovascular medicine, with particular emphasis on atrial fibrillation screening protocols, carotid disease management, and methodological innovations in trial design. These works demonstrate his leadership in translating clinical trial evidence into practical vascular care guidelines.
Dr. Bulbulia's educational path began with medical studies at Cambridge University and The Royal London Hospital (graduating 1994), followed by comprehensive surgical training across London, Oxford, and Southwest England before his 2009 consultant appointment.
