Richard Bourne

Dr Richard Bourne is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at The University of Manchester and holds a Visiting Professorship in Pharmacy at Newcastle University. He is also a Consultant Pharmacist in Critical Care at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust since 2009. His roles include membership in national/international bodies such as the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FICM), European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM), and editorial board positions for CHEST Critical Care (2025).

Research Interests: Focuses on medicines optimization in critically ill patients, clinical pharmacy workforce development, and mitigating burnout in acute care pharmacists. Current projects include NIHR-funded research on post-ICU medication safety interventions.

Research Themes: Articles address medication safety in critical care transitions, ICU patient outcomes, and consensus guidelines for geriatric ICU care. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to reduce medication errors and improve patient recovery.
