PD Dr. Richard Blender (retired) is a Research Scientist affiliated with the University of Hamburg's Department of Earth System Sciences, part of the Meteorological Institute (MI). He is a member of the Atmospheric Dynamics and Predictability group within the MIAGs research unit. His academic focus revolves around Climate Variability, Extremes (including heat waves and cyclones), and Dynamic Meteorology. He contributed to the MIN Faculty's Library and E-Media Committee (BEMA) and represented the Department of Geosciences.
Teaching responsibilities included courses such as Introduction to Theoretical Meteorology, Advanced Theoretical Meteorology, and Meteorological Statistics using R. His research emphasizes long-term climate patterns, cyclone behavior in reanalysis datasets (e.g., ERA5), model biases, and extreme weather event analysis. Notable contributions include studies on extratropical cyclones, Rossby wave dynamics, and stochastic methods in climate modeling.
Publications span over two decades, analyzing climate variability across scales, including 1/f noise in weather systems, volcanic impacts on climate simulations, and the Madden-Julian Oscillation. Collaborations include IMILAST (cyclone tracking algorithms) and Holocene climate reconstructions. Despite retirement, his work continues through ongoing academic publications and legacy in climate dynamics research.
