Richard Bellamy is a Professor of Political Science at University College London (UCL) and a Senior Fellow at the Hertie School. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and has held academic roles at multiple institutions including UCL, the European University Institute (EUI), and the University of Exeter. His research focuses on political theory, constitutionalism, European integration, and Italian political thought. Bellamy has authored 11 monographs and over 150 articles, including works on republican constitutionalism and EU democracy. He has been recognized with the Serena Medal (British Academy) and elected as a Fellow of the British Academy (2022) and Member of Academia Europaea (2024).
His academic leadership includes founding UCL’s Department of Political Science and European Institute, directing the Max Weber Programme at EUI (2014–2019), and serving on the 2014 REF panel. He supervises PhD students in political theory and teaches modules on public ethics and global ethics. Bellamy’s work bridges intellectual history, legal philosophy, and comparative politics, addressing topics like citizenship, democracy, and global justice. He contributes to journals such as Global Constitutionalism and European Journal of Political Theory, and his recent projects explore differentiated integration and democratic legitimacy in Europe.
