Rich Mildren

Rich Mildren is a Professor of Physics at Macquarie University's School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, leading the Diamond Laser Group within the MQ Photonics Research Centre. His research focuses on diamond-based photonics, including high-power Raman and Brillouin lasers, quantum phenomena, and laser-material interactions. He holds an ARC Future Fellowship (2010-2014) and is a Eureka Prize winner and Optica Fellow.

Education: PhD in Laser Physics (Macquarie University, 1997), BSc Hons in Physics (University of Adelaide, 1990). He teaches courses in optics and life science physics, including PHYS1210, PHYS3010, and PHYS7906.

Research emphasizes diamond's unique optical properties for applications in adaptive optics, quantum sensing, and medical lasers. Key projects include sodium guide-star lasers for astronomy and kilowatt-class directed energy systems. Over 30 postdoctoral researchers and PhD students have been mentored under his guidance.
