About
Dr. Ricardo Silva is an Assistant Professor in the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources at the University of Manitoba. His research focuses on Paleoenvironmental Sedimentology, particularly the mechanisms driving oceanic anoxic events (OAEs) and organic matter preservation in geological history. He leads the BETY research group, applying multidisciplinary methods including sedimentology, geochemistry, and petroleum systems modeling to study depositional systems globally.
- PhD in Geology from University of Coimbra (2013)
- Postdoctoral positions at Dalhousie University (2013–2018) and Trinity College Dublin (2019–2021)
Key research areas include the Early Jurassic (Sinemurian–Toarcian) stratigraphy, Atlantic Margin geology, and environmental changes linked to large igneous provinces. He collaborates internationally with institutions in Portugal, Spain, the UK, and Canada, and is a member of major organizations like the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program-Canada and the Geological Association of Canada.
Current projects include the ICDP JET project (Early Jurassic Earth System & Timescale) and IGCP Project #739. Silva emphasizes inclusive academic practices to support underrepresented groups in geoscience.
