About
Reto Boller has served as Professor of Painting in the Art Department at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart since 2007. Born in Zurich in 1966, he maintains an active studio practice in Zurich while shaping the next generation of artists through his pedagogical approach.
His educational foundation includes:
- Zurich University of the Arts (CH), Fine Arts Program (1991-1995)
- School of Design, Romanshorn (CH), Preparatory Course (1988-1989)
Boller's artistic practice critically examines boundaries between figuration and abstraction, bodily presence and dissolution, and artistic conventions within contemporary contexts. He transforms everyday materials and objects through repurposed combinations, creating spatial installations that oscillate between surface and volume while maintaining conceptual openness. His methodology balances structured exploration with unrestricted experimentation, fostering evolving personal image archives through shifting critical perspectives.
His notable recognition includes:
- 1st prize in invitational competition for New municipal administration center in Affoltern a. A. (2005)
Teaching emphasizes professional preparation through studio critiques, exhibition visits, and artist studio encounters. Boller cultivates environments where students develop critical self-assessment skills by continuously reevaluating applied criteria within the dynamic tension between planned methodology and spontaneous discovery.
