About
Professor Resa M Kelly is a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry within the College of Science at San José State University. She serves as Director of Science Education and was a Board Member of the ACS IAC (2020-2022). Her research focuses on chemical education, particularly on how students learn and modify their understanding of chemistry concepts through molecular visualizations and metacognitive monitoring activities.
- Doctor of Philosophy (Chemistry Education), University of Northern Colorado, 2005
- Master of Science (Chemistry Education), University of Northern Colorado, 2004
- Master of Arts (Chemistry), University of Northern Iowa, 2000
- Bachelor of Arts (Chemistry), University of Northern Iowa, 1992
- Bachelor of Arts (Psychology), University of Notre Dame, 1990
Her research explores:
- Designing molecular animations for conceptual understanding
- Developing experimental videos with controls and variables
- Metacognitive monitoring in chemistry learning
- Mental model analysis through interviews and think-aloud sessions
- Faculty pedagogical changes through learning communities
- Student critique of visualization accuracy
Research trends in her publications show sustained focus on molecular visualization design, student conceptual development, and metacognitive strategies in chemistry education across secondary and tertiary levels. Key topics include acid-base reactions, redox processes, and precipitation mechanisms.
Scientific awards include:
- NSF Award #1525557 for chemistry visualization development
Professor Kelly advises both graduate and undergraduate students in science education research projects. Current students include Sean Nguyen, while former advisees like Kiera Wright and Brandon Wall have completed studies on visualization effectiveness and conceptual transfer.
Her work is associated with the SJSU Science Education Program and focuses on developing research-based visualization tools for chemistry instruction.
