Dr. Rene Renteria is an Associate Professor in the Department of Clinically Applied Science Education at the University of Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine. He holds a PhD in Neuroscience from Yale University and completed postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Francisco. Previously at UT Health San Antonio, he conducted NIH-funded research on diabetic retinopathy pathophysiology and taught in both medical and nursing programs.
His research spans activity-dependent neural development, mammalian retinal inhibitory circuitry, and diabetic retinopathy mechanisms. He employs tadpole retinotectal models and electrophysiological approaches to study visual system plasticity and disease pathways.
Dr. Renteria is dedicated to implementing evidence-based active learning methodologies in medical education. He maintains adjunct status at UT Health San Antonio for ongoing research collaborations while focusing on pedagogical innovation at UIW.
