Renate E. Meyer

Renate E. Meyer is a Professor of Organization Studies at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU), serving as Head of the Institute for Organization Studies and Co-head of the Research Institute for Urban Management and Governance. She maintains additional academic roles as Part-time Professor of Institutional Theory at CBS Copenhagen Business School, Visiting Professor at Saïd Business School (University of Oxford), and Visiting Professorial Fellow at the Alberta School of Business (University of Alberta).

Her research centers on phenomenological institutional organization theory, multimodal research, and institutional change dynamics. Key foci include institutionalization of management innovations, translation ecosystems, framing processes, and unintended consequences of organizational change. Current empirical investigations address collective action in crises (refugees, pandemics, natural disasters), climate change debates, anti-vaccination discourses, science skepticism, and governance gaps in multisector settings involving public infrastructure for social inclusion.

Professor Meyer held the 2021 Division Chair position for the Organizations and Management Theory (OMT) Division of the Academy of Management and previously served as Editor-in-Chief of Organization Studies. She co-founded an international network for institutional theory to advance global scholarly collaboration.

At WU, she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Organization and Governance, including SBWL core and advanced courses, Master's thesis supervision, and management accounting. She leads PhD seminars at CBS Copenhagen Business School on institutional analysis and organizational transformation. Her research is conducted through the institutes she directs, which integrate interdisciplinary teams examining organizational utopias/dystopias and governance arrangements in complex societal challenges.
