Reint E. Gropp is the President of the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) and a Full Professor of Economics at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg since 2014. He holds an endowed Chair in Sustainable Banking and Finance (previously at Goethe-University Frankfurt), and served as Deputy Head of the Financial Research Division at the European Central Bank (ECB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He earned his PhD in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1994) and studied at the University of Freiburg.
His research focuses on financial economics, macroeconomics, corporate finance, and monetary policy. Key themes include banking regulation, crisis management, public guarantees' effects on allocative efficiency, and household portfolio behavior under policy changes. Recent work analyzes how regulatory adjustments inflate bank capital ratios and the long-term impacts of supervisory forbearance on regional economic health.
Dr. Gropp is an Associate Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and consults for central banks. His research outputs span refereed journals like the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis and Journal of Monetary Economics, alongside IWH Discussion Papers addressing labor market outcomes under bank guarantees and geographic banking strategies.
