About
Reinhard Genzel is a Full Professor of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley since 1999 and the Director and Scientific Member at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics since 1986. His research focuses on infrared and submillimetre astronomy and experimental astrophysics, particularly the dynamics of the galactic center and black hole studies.
Genzel earned a doctorate from the Max Planck Institute for Radioastronomy in 1978 and completed postdoctoral work at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (1978–1980). His positions include Associate Professor of Physics at UC Berkeley (1981–1985) and Full Professor at UC Berkeley (1985–1986, 1999–present).
Genzel’s publications highlight his work in galactic dynamics, stellar orbits, and astronomical instrumentation, with recent studies on galaxy mergers and active galactic nuclei (e.g., NGC 6240, 1999; ultraluminous IRAS galaxies, 1998). His research bridges observational astrophysics and theoretical interpretations of galactic evolution.
Scientific Awards and Honors:
