About
PD Dr. Reinhard Bauer leads research at the University of Bonn's Life & Medical Sciences Institute (LIMES), focusing on lipid metabolism and organ physiology. His work examines how ceramide synthases regulate lipid homeostasis and influence neurodevelopment through gut-brain-axis communication.
Research domains include:
- Ceramide synthase function in lipid sensing and gene regulation
- Mitochondrial ROS production in metabolic disorders
- Peroxisome biogenesis and lipid storage diseases
- Zebrafish models for lipid metabolism studies
Bauer employs Drosophila genetics complemented by murine models and primary cell cultures to investigate fundamental questions in lipid metabolism. His team has developed conditional knock-out mouse models to study lipid regulators in liver, adipose tissue, and kidney.
Supported by DFG grants including SFBs 645, 704 and TRR 83, Bauer collaborates internationally on projects examining the relationship between metabolism and innate immunity.
