Rebecca Smith

Rebecca Smith is a Lecturer at UHI North West and Hebrides, affiliated with the University of the Highlands and Islands and the Energy Innovation Team. She holds a BSc (Honours) in Geography and an MSc in Sustainable Rural Development.

• Teaching: Leads modules on Sustainable Development programs, including Empowering Communities, Economic Development Policy & Theory, Planning for Community Projects, Urban and Regional Planning (undergraduate), and Developing Communities (postgraduate).
• Research: Focuses on waste recycling, zero waste policies, and sustainable development in remote/rural communities.
• SDGs: Contributions align with UN Sustainable Development Goals for sustainable communities and responsible consumption.

Research Expertise
Her PhD research investigates barriers and opportunities for zero waste adoption in remote/rural areas, including localized recycling solutions and revenue generation models. This work is supported by a dedicated research grant.
