Rebecca Aviel serves as Professor of Law and Maxine Kurtz Faculty Research Scholar at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. She holds a JD from Harvard Law School and a BA in Anthropology from Yale University. Her research explores intersections of legal ethics, family law, and constitutional law, with current focus on attorney roles in constitutional democracies and innovations in family court legal services.
Her influential publication The Weaponization of Attorney’s Fees in an Age of Constitutional Warfare (Yale Law Journal, 2023) examines how states use fee awards to evade judicial scrutiny in contentious areas like abortion and gun control. She practiced litigation at Morrison & Foerster in San Francisco and clerked for Judge Barry Silverman of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
