Raymond Patton

Raymond Patton serves as Associate Professor of History and Faculty Director of the Honors Program and Macaulay Honors College at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York. Previously, he held roles as Director of Educational Partnerships and General Education at John Jay College and faculty member at Drury University.

His academic credentials include a PhD in History (2011) and MA in Russian and East European Studies (2005) from the University of Michigan, and a BA in History and Philosophy (2003) from the University of Georgia.

Dr. Patton's research examines how popular culture and aesthetics intersected with global politics during the Cold War era. His work emphasizes transnational punk movements' role in dissolving ideological boundaries between the "first," "second," and "third" worlds. Key research domains include Cultural History, Cold War History, Transnational Movements, Popular Culture Studies, Punk Subculture, and Global Revolutions.

His seminal publication Punk Crisis: The Global Punk Rock Revolution (2018) analyzes how punk rock created new identity frameworks that transcended Cold War political categories.
