About
Raymond J Andersen is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Sciences at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Faculty of Science. His research integrates marine natural products chemistry with drug discovery, focusing on bioactive metabolites from marine organisms.
He holds a B.Sc. from the University of Alberta (1969), an M.Sc. from UC Berkeley (1970), a Ph.D. from UC San Diego (1975), and completed postdoctoral work at MIT (1975-76).
His research explores:
- Isolation and structural analysis of novel terpenes, alkaloids, and peptides from marine invertebrates and bacteria.
- Biosynthetic pathways of defensive metabolites in nudibranchs using stable isotope methods.
- Screening for cytotoxic, antibiotic, and enzyme-inhibiting compounds with pharmaceutical potential.
Scientific awards include:
- Rutherford Medal in Chemistry (1988)
- CIC Medal (2012)
- Paul J. Scheuer Award (2012)
- Arthur E. Schwarting Award (2003)
- Killam Research Prize (1987)
He mentors graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in his lab at UBC's COPP Building, investigating marine chemical ecology and therapeutic lead development.
