Raven Garvey

Raven Garvey is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Michigan. She is affiliated with the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) and the International Institute, reflecting her research focus on South American prehistory. Her work bridges archaeology, geochemistry, and paleoenvironmental studies to explore hunter-gatherer adaptations, obsidian sourcing, and human-environment interactions.

Garvey’s research emphasizes prehistoric human occupation of Patagonian and Andean landscapes, including studies on lithic technology, obsidian hydration dating, and the impacts of climate change on foraging strategies. She collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to address questions of cultural evolution, subsistence strategies, and resource exploitation in regions such as Chilean Patagonia and the Argentine Andes.

Her recent projects include investigating auroral wandering’s effects on prehistoric chronology and analyzing spatial patterns of human settlement in response to environmental shifts.
