Raul Mario serves as Full Professor of German Literature and Director of the Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Bergamo since October 2024. Previously, he was President of the Degree Program in Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures (L-11) from 2018 to 2024 and Coordinator of the Doctoral Program in Transcultural Humanistic Studies from 2021 to 2024. He represents the University of Bergamo in the international network 'PhDnet - Literary and Cultural Studies' connecting institutions across Europe.
His research spans multiple periods of German literature including the Classical-Romantic period (Goethe, Schiller, Novalis, E.T.A. Hoffmann), Vormärz, Poetic Realism (Büchner, Storm), and German literary civilization of the Moderne (Benjamin, Bloch, Döblin). He has made significant contributions to understanding cultural memory in German-language literature, particularly regarding WWII and Holocaust representation. His recent work explores science-literature relationships, intermediality between writing and visual arts, and translation theory.
His 149 publications demonstrate consistent scholarly output with 15 major works in the last two years alone, showing particular focus on energy humanities, literary representation of power, publishing industry narratives, and contemporary German literature's engagement with identity. His research connects historical literary analysis with current theoretical frameworks.
