Randy Heflin is a Professor of Physics at Virginia Tech and currently serves as Senior Associate Vice President for Research and Innovation. He holds affiliations with the College of Science, Department of Physics, and is an Affiliate Professor of Materials Science and Engineering. Heflin's research focuses on nonlinear optical and optoelectronic properties of organic nanomaterials, including conjugated polymers and fullerenes. His work spans projects like self-assembled multilayers (ISAMs), plasmonic enhancements, and organic photovoltaics. He has held leadership roles including Associate Dean for Research in the College of Science (2014-2022) and Director of the Nanoscience Division at the Academy of Integrated Science.
Education: B.S. in Physics (High Honors) from College of William and Mary (1980-1984); Ph.D. in Physics from University of Pennsylvania (1984-1990).
Research interests include organic optoelectronics, nanotechnology, and materials science. His group has pioneered advancements in electrochromic devices, fiber optic biosensors, and polymer-based photovoltaics. Key achievements include over 100 peer-reviewed publications, three patents, and honors like the Cottrell Scholars Award (1995) and Elias Burstein Award (1990).
Advising includes mentoring students like Dong Wang, Jonathan Metzman, and others. Active in editorial roles for International Journal of Nanoscience and professional organizations. His labs and teams collaborate on projects involving nanomaterials, optical sensors, and energy materials.
