About
Rafael Yuste is a Professor of Biological Sciences at Columbia University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He holds affiliations with the Kavli Institute for Brain Circuits and the Cajal Institute in Madrid. His research focuses on cortical circuits, dendritic spine biophysics, and neuroethical challenges posed by emerging technologies. Yuste pioneered calcium imaging and two-photon microscopy to study neuronal ensembles, contributing to the Brain Activity Map Project. He advocates for neuro-rights frameworks to address privacy and ethical concerns in neurotechnology.
Yuste’s education includes an MD from Universidad Autónoma in Madrid and a PhD in Rockefeller University under Larry Katz. Postdoctoral training at Bell Labs with David Tank and Winfried Denk shaped his technical expertise. He joined Columbia in 1996, becoming an HHMI Investigator in 2005. His work bridges basic neuroscience with societal impact, addressing neural circuit dysfunction in schizophrenia and advancing neuroethics.
Key research interests span neural ensemble dynamics, optogenetic tools, and neurotechnology governance. His recent articles emphasize neuroprivacy (e.g., mental privacy legal frameworks), neural circuit modeling in Hydra, and neuro-rights advocacy. Awards include the Society for Neuroscience Young Investigator Award. Yuste’s labs develop imaging techniques and explore fundamental principles of nervous systems across species.
