Rafael Leonisio Calvo

Rafael Leonisio Calvo is a Lecturer at the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration at the University of Deusto in Spain. His research focuses on Basque politics, political parties, electoral behavior, and the analysis of political discourse, particularly regarding nationalism, terrorism, and regional autonomy. He holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of the Basque Country (2013) and was a postdoctoral researcher under the Spanish Ministry's Formación de Profesorado Universitario program (2002-2005). He is a member of the Regional Manifestos Project research team at the University of Deusto.

His work examines the Basque Nationalist Party's influence on public opinion, the evolution of the Basque Patriotic Left, and ETA's impact on political discourse. Key publications include studies on Basque electoral behavior, nationalism's role in voting patterns, and the quantitative analysis of terrorism references in political speeches. His book Cambio y continuidad en el discurso político: El caso del Partido Socialista de Euskadi (1977-2011) analyzes the Socialist Party's discourse on Basque-Spanish relations. Co-authored works include La Euskadi ciudadana. Los socialistas en el Gobierno Vasco, 1936-2012 and ETA's Terrorist Campaign: From Violence to Politics, 1968–2015, which explores the group's decline and societal impact.

His research employs content analysis, survey data, and comparative methods to study political violence, victim narratives, and elite discourse. He has contributed to debates on the salience of nationalism vs. left-right divides in Basque elections and the role of terrorism in shaping political agendas. His work highlights the interplay between political elites and public opinion in conflict regions.
